Windows XP - Customizing the Places Bar
Overview: The Places bar locations in a Common Dialog
(Open/Save As) boxes can be customized to your choice of folders.
1. Run REGEDIT.
2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER | Software | Microsoft | Windows
| CurrentVersion | Policies | comdlg32 | Placesbar.
3. By default the comdlg32 and Placesbar keys are not present; you need
to create them.
4. Right-Click POLICIES and scroll to NEW
| KEY. Type COMDLG32.
5. Right-Click COMDLG32 and scroll to NEW
| KEY. Type Placesbar.
6. Double-Click Placesbar.
7. in the right pane, right-click and scroll to NEW
| STRING VALUE. Type Place0. Double-click
Place0 and insert the path for the desired shortcut.
8. You may create up to 5 values. (Place0, Place1,
Place2, Place3 and Place4)
* NOTE: on some computers it is necessary to use a double back slash.
For example: "Place0"="c:\\winnt"
You may also use Group Policy to accomplish the same task:
1. Go to START | RUN and type GPEDIT.MSC.
Click OK.
2. Expand USER CONFIGURATION | ADMINISTRATIVE
TEMPLATES | WINDOWS COMPONENTS | WINDOWS
EXPLORER and highlight COMMON OPEN FILE DIALOG.
3. In the right pane, double-click ITEMS DISPLAYED IN THE PLACES
BAR.
